About Islington
The London Borough of Islington is a London borough in North or the City of London. Comprising the postal districts EC1, N1, N4, N5, N6, N7, N8, N19 and WC1, Islington was formed in 1965 by merging the former metropolitan boroughs of Islington and Finsbury. The borough contains two Westminster parliamentary constituencies; Islington North and Islington South & Finsbury. At its heart is the famous Angel Islington, centered around Islington Green and is a popular area for socializing with many bars and restaurants. Allen and Young Removals carry out all moving services including removals, man and van, storage, packing and house clearance in the Islington area.
Islington was originally named by the Saxons Giseldone (AD1005), then Gislandune (AD1062). The name means ‘Gisla’s hill’ from the Old English personal name Gisla and dun ‘hill’, ‘down’. The name then later mutated to Isledon, which remained in use well into the 17th century when the modern form evolved.
In medieval times, Islington was just one of many small manors in the area along with Bernersbury, Neweton Berewe or Hey-bury, and Canonesbury. These names are still used today as Barnsbury, Highbury and Canonbury, having remained in use since the 13th and 14th centuries. Islington came to be applied as the name for the parish covering these villages, and was the name chosen for the Metropolitan Borough of Islington on its formation in 1899. On the merger with Finsbury in 1965 to form the modern borough this name came to be applied to the whole borough. Islington is also proud to be home to the world’s greatest football club, Arsenal FC, now playing in the beautiful Emirates stadium. The legendary 1930s Art Deco Highbury Stadium as now been re-developed as modern appartments. Read more…
